In 1838 nearly 20,000 Cherokees were removed from their homes to a reservation in Oklahoma, traveling the well-known "Trail of Tears." Some escaped this removal and their descendants now occupy the Qualla Boundary in western North Carolina. These 1930s and 1940s postcards area a commercialized view of their new way of life on a reservation.
